The hotel chain Scandic nominated for prestigious German Sustainability Award
Scandic is one of three nominees for the internationally recognised German Sustainability Award “Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis.” Scandic is also the first hotel chain ever to be nominated. The award, which goes to people, cities and companies that promote the idea of a sustainable society, received 800 submissions this year.
Scandic reduces its environmental impact - Sustainability report – first half of 2013
The report for 2013 shows a continued reduction in the areas of water, energy and waste. During the first half of 2013, Scandic’s energy consumption fell by 0.42%, water consumption was down 3.26% and unsorted waste was 10.17% less, compared with the same period last year. Emissions of carbon dioxide have, however, risen by 4.71%.
Scandic restaurants to stop using palm oil
For environmental reasons, Scandic has decided to discontinue the use of palm oil and replace it with rapeseed and sunflower seed oil. The hotel chain’s 160 restaurants use around 75 cubic metres of oil in deep-frying every year. Palm oil is grown in areas which were previously covered by tropical rain forests – forests which are regarded as the most diverse eco systems in the world.
Scandic opens new hotel in Kristiansand
Scandic is continuing its expansion in the Nordic market, with today’s opening of Scandic Kristiansand Bystranda in Norway. The hotel is situated in idyllic Bystranda, in the centre of Kristiansand, with over 800 beds and 229 rooms, 23 of which are adapted for disabled guests. Scandic Kristiansand Bystranda is Nordic Ecolabelled.

Scandic Hotels turns 50 - Trendsetting hotel chain looks to the future
The year was 1963. On 20 May, the Esso Motor Hotell opened its doors in Laxå and welcomed its first guests. Fast-forward 50 years and the hotel chain has enjoyed strong growth, making its mark on both the Swedish and the international hotel industry along the way. In 1984, Esso Motor Hotell changed its name to Scandic Hotels, a chain that now has 155 hotels and around 30,000 rooms across Europe.
Scandic stands its ground as the best hotel chain on sustainability
For the third year in a row, Scandic has been voted the most sustainable hotel chain by the 9,000 Swedish consumers who participated in Sustainable Brands*, the annual survey that ranks how companies work on environmental and social responsibility. In total across all sectors Scandic comes in 16th place out of 228.
