The year was 1963. On 20 May, the Esso Motor Hotell opened its doors in Laxå and welcomed its first guests. Fast-forward 50 years and the hotel chain has enjoyed strong growth, making its mark on both the Swedish and the international hotel industry along the way. In 1984, Esso Motor Hotell changed its name to Scandic Hotels, a chain that now has 155 hotels and around 30,000 rooms across Europe.

For the third year in a row, Scandic has been voted the most sustainable hotel chain by the 9,000 Swedish consumers who participated in Sustainable Brands*, the annual survey that ranks how companies work on environmental and social responsibility. In total across all sectors Scandic comes in 16th place out of 228.

On 14 June Gotland’s biggest hotel – Visby HamnHotell – will become Scandic’s first hotel on the popular Swedish island. The comprehensive refurbishment and extension of the hotel has been completed and it is now time for a name change. The new Scandic Visby will be offering this summer’s guests 214 rooms, many with sea views and a balcony or terrace.

Scandic Friends, the Nordic hotel industry’s biggest frequent guest programme, has seen member numbers grow to around 930,000 since its launch in 2008. This autumn the programme is on track to exceed a million members. The most popular way to spend points is on reward nights at Scandic, but also with partners such as the Finnish hotel chain Lapland Hotels.

To achieve a sustainable society, Scandic CEO Anders Ehrling issues a challenge to the whole Nordic hotel industry as part of Earth Hour on 23 March. The challenge is to get the industry to replace its old filament bulbs with low-energy bulbs or LEDs.

Scandic is now further strengthening its position as a world leader in environmental work by launching its own hair and skin care range for 2013 in partnership with FACE Stockholm. This range of products will be introduced at all 156 hotels, enabling Scandic to offer its guests a better hotel experience, as the guests help Scandic to cut plastic consumption by 21 tonnes per year.

Scandic is launching its own hair and skin care range in partnership with FACE Stockholm. Shampoo, shower gel and hand soap will be introduced in 30,000 hotel rooms, with Superior Extra rooms also getting conditioner and skin lotion. The new products will raise the standard at each of Scandic’s 156 hotels.

Scandic Hotels increased revenues and improved its operating profit in 2012. Over the year, Scandic opened six new hotels and launched an extensive refurbishment programme for its roadside hotels. The Group also upped its focus on its restaurant business, not least by introducing ‘Scandic Classics’ to the menu, which helped to drive up restaurant sales.

Scandic Palace Hotel in central Tallinn, Estonia, will be sold to a new property owner and hotel operator on 30 April 2013. The new owners are EfTEN Real Estate Fund and Vello Kunmans AS Esraven. This deal sees Scandic Hotels streamlining its business as the Nordic region’s biggest hotel operator.
